Biography
Early life (1980-1991)
Not much is known about Hermione's life before she entered the wizarding world. She was the only child of Muggle parents, Mr. and Mrs. Granger, both dentists in London. Mr. and Mrs. Granger were seen as "quite ordinary," and although they were "a bit bemused" by their daughter's oddities, they were proud of her.
In the summer of 1991, Hermione was surprised to learn that she was a witch and was invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She eagerly accepted and took to studying magic even before she began her first year at Hogwarts in September of 1991, learning all the set spell books by heart and even managing to perform "a few spells" successfully. In addition to the texts set by the school, Hermione brought several other books for reference and to deepen her understanding of the wizarding world.
Hogwarts years (1991-1997)
Terry Boot: "How come you're not in Ravenclaw? With brains like yours?"
Hermione: "Well, the Sorting Hat did seriously consider putting me in Ravenclaw during my Sorting, but it decided on Gryffindor in the end."
— Hermione at a DA meeting
Hermione enjoyed her years as a pupil at Hogwarts and took assignments, classes, and school rules very seriously. Her favourite subjects were initially Charms and later Arithmancy, and the only areas of study that gave her trouble were Flying and Divination. Some students, such as Terry Boot, wondered why Hermione was sorted into Gryffindor house rather than Ravenclaw, given her keen mind. Hermione admitted that the Sorting Hat did consider putting her in Ravenclaw. Being sorted into Gryffindor, Hermione would share a dormitory with Lavender Brown, Parvati Patil, and two other girls. However, after marrying Snape, she moved into his chamber.
But she proved her rightful place in Gryffindor with her steadfast bravery and loyalty to her friends, Hogwarts, and Dumbledore's Army. The Sorting Hat likely put her in Gryffindor in the first place because she chose it, just as Harry chose not to be in Slytherin; on the train, she says, "Gryffindor... sounds by far the best."
First year
Severus Snape: "You set my robes on fire?"
Hermione: "It was a mistake, we did not know that time ..."
Severus Snape: "You did not know what??"
Hermione: "That... you didn't want to steal stone."
— Severus, after seeing Hermione's mind
Hermione attends Professor Snape's potions class and asks Harry questions. He didn’t know the answer, she raised her hands, and after a few minutes, and tells her to put her hand down and told Harry the answers himself and took away points from the Gryffindor house for Harry’s cheek on lack of answering, not paying attention, and giving Snape an attitude on telling Hermione the answer, and shamed he didn’t let her answer his questions.
Later, during the Gryffindor-Slytherin match in her first year. Hermione cast a bluebell flame to set Snape's robes on fire, and she cast the spell against Devil's Snare when she, Harry, and Ron worked through the challenges surrounding the Philosopher's Stone.
Sixth year
Severus Snape: "You are 17 years old, Ms. Granger. We can't do it!"
Hermione: "We have to protect Hogwarts and Harry. It's the only way, Professor."
— Severus and Hermione's discussion about their arranged marriage.
The parchment resting on the mahogany desk in the Headmaster’s office was crisp, edged with the official seal of the Wizarding Examinations Authority. It was a testament to a year of blistering intellect: ten O.W.L.s, nine of them marked with the coveted ‘Outstanding,’ and a single ‘Exceeds Expectations’ in Defence Against the Dark Arts.
Albus Dumbledore sat behind his desk, his fingers steepled, his blue eyes veiled by the half-moon spectacles. Opposite him sat Severus Snape, his black robes a stark shadow against the warm glow of the office, his expression a mask of granite-cold resignation. "The intelligence gathered by the Order is undeniable," Dumbledore said, his voice soft but carrying the finality of a gavel. "Voldemort’s reach is expanding, and his interest in those who bridge the gap between worlds—the brilliant and the arcane—is becoming predatory. Severus is at the precipice of his cover, and you, Hermione, possess a mind that the Dark Lord would seek to either possess or extinguish." Hermione felt the blood drain from her face. "A marriage?" Snape finally stirred, his gaze flicking toward her with a look of profound distaste—not for her, she realized, but for the circumstances. "It is an ancient magical tether," he drawled, his voice like dry parchment rubbing together. "A Blood-Binding of this nature would create a localized shroud. It would mask your signature, Granger, making you invisible to his Legilimency, and it would bond my position to your protection in a way that is... legally and magically absolute." Hermione felt the familiar, frantic rhythm of her logical mind trying to categorize the situation. Marriage. A binding ritual. To him. "It violates every notion of autonomy I have ever fought for," she whispered. "And yet," Dumbledore added gently, "it is the only way to shield the brightest witch of her age while keeping Severus at the right hand of a monster who is beginning to suspect his proximity." Hermione looked at the O.W.L. results again. She had spent her life preparing for a future defined by titles, careers, and the pursuit of truth. Now, that future was being folded into a clandestine pact of war. She looked at Snape—the man who despised her curiosity, yet respected her capability. She saw the exhaustion behind his eyes, the weariness of a man living a thousand lives for the sake of one victory. She took a breath, the scent of dust and ancient books filling her lungs. She realized then that academic prestige was merely a prelude; the real test was not on parchment in the Great Hall, but in the willingness to sacrifice everything for an outcome no one else could see. "The greater good," she stated, her voice hardening with resolve. Snape stood, his movements stiff. He didn't offer a hand or a smile, but he inclined his head in acknowledgment of her intelligence—the only currency that mattered to either of them."The greater good," Snape repeated, his voice barely a murmur. Hermione picked up her O.W.L. results, tucked them into her robes, and prepared to rewrite the terms of her existence. The war had demanded her mind; now, it would have her life. And for the sake of the world they were fighting to save, she would ensure it was a bargain the Dark Lord would regret.
At this point, it was evident that Hermione harbored deep romantic feelings for Snape. However, after their marriage, their relationship encountered serious obstacles, particularly highlighted during the Slug Club party. Snape couldn't hide his frustration as he watched Hermione dance with Sirius. When Sirius affectionately referred to Hermione as "kitten," Snape's jealousy erupted, leading him to interrupt them, showcasing the intensity of his emotions.
Hermione was deeply troubled by Harry's use of the 'Half-Blood Prince' textbook to gain an unfair advantage in Potions. Though she chose not to report him, she did uncover a clue about the book's mysterious owner. Her alarm grew as she encountered the increasingly dark magic within its pages, especially spells like Sectumsempra, which raised serious concerns about their potential consequences.
In the heat of a dispute between Snape and Harry, Harry playfully brought up Snape's arranged marriage to Hermione and pointed out that Hermione had kissed Viktor Krum earlier in their relationship. This comment prompted Snape to respond with a cold demeanor towards Hermione, creating a sense of confusion for her as she navigated his unexpected shift in attitude.
Later on, Hermione decided to attend Slughorn's Christmas party with Cormac McLaggen as a way to get back at Severus. However, when McLaggen failed to show up, she couldn't shake the feeling that Snape had something to do with it. When Severus approached her to talk, she chose to ignore him, still feeling hurt and frustrated by his treatment of Cormac. Over time, though, the tension between them eased, leading to a gradual improvement in their relationship.
Reconciliation with Snape
After overcoming jealousy and bitterness, their marriage flourished. They became more connected and intimate, with Snape even participating in Death Eater meetings while Hermione stayed at Hogwarts, eagerly waiting for him. Her feelings for Snape deepened significantly, though she was still unaware that what she felt was, in fact, love.
At this point, Ron was clearly disillusioned with his relationship with Lavender. Her possessiveness and her annoying nickname for him, "Won-Won," began to wear on him. As he distanced himself from her, Lavender's suspicions about his connection with Hermione deepened, leading to a heated argument. When Lavender caught Ron and Hermione emerging alone from the boys' dormitories (with Harry also present but hidden under the invisibility cloak), it pushed her over the edge. This confrontation culminated in a fierce fight, ultimately resulting in their breakup.
Later, Hermione entered Snape's chambers and shared the news about Ron's breakup with Lavender. Snape smirked knowingly and revealed that Lavender had been brewing a potion for someone weeks prior. At that time, he hadn't realized it was a love potion she was concocting.
The once-biting chill of the potions classroom had transformed for Hermione. A gentle warmth now radiated from Professor Snape’s corner, reflecting a bond forged through shared vulnerability and countless late-night research sessions in the restricted section. They had discovered a rhythm together, communicating through knowing glances and the mutual pride of crafting a flawless potion. Their romantic relationship, once marked by hesitation, had seamlessly evolved into a comfortable, almost domestic harmony that felt both natural and fulfilling.
This newfound comfort had a remarkable effect on Hermione, unlocking her true potential. Nonverbal magic, once an intimidating challenge, now flowed from her fingertips with an effortless elegance that even astonished Snape. She quickly emerged as the first in her year to master this skill, wielding her wand as if it were a natural extension of her own will—a silent and powerful tool for her spellcasting. This ability not only enhanced her confidence but also served as an unbeatable shield against any threats she faced.
As the school year was drawing to a close, Harry's instincts were ultimately validated. Malfoy successfully led the Death Eaters into Hogwarts using a pair of vanishing cabinets. One cabinet was hidden away in Borgin and Burkes, while the other was cleverly concealed in the Room of Hidden Things, which Malfoy had managed to repair despite the assumption that it was broken. This breach resulted in the intense Battle of the Astronomy Tower. Hermione bravely fought alongside her friends and emerged unscathed, thanks to a stroke of luck from some Felix Felicis. This potion, a prize Harry had won in a Potions competition, was given to Hermione along with Ron and Ginny, as Harry sensed the impending danger and wanted to ensure their safety.
Throughout the school year, Hermione and Ron kept themselves well-informed about Harry's private lessons with Dumbledore. These sessions were crucial because they revealed the existence of Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes—essential for his immortality. At Dumbledore's funeral, after his tragic death at the hands of Snape during the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, Hermione found comfort in Ron's arms as she mourned.
In the aftermath, Harry expressed a profound desire to leave Hogwarts behind to hunt for the Horcruxes that held the secret to Voldemort's defeat. Despite Harry's reluctance to go it alone, Hermione and Ron made a courageous pledge to abandon their final year at Hogwarts to stand by his side. Before they departed the school, Hermione successfully summoned critical texts on Horcruxes from Dumbledore's office—where the late headmaster had placed them after the subject was banned.
However, a gripping twist awaited Hermione: by summer's end, she discovered she was pregnant, a secret that left her in a state of shock, completely unbeknownst to her friends. This revelation would add another layer of complexity to their already daunting journey.
Horcrux hunt (1997–1998)
Harry Potter: "Listen!"
Hermione: "No, Harry, you listen. We're coming with you. That was decided months ago — years, really."
— Hermione sticking by her vow to accompany Harry on his hunt
The parchment on the kitchen table was weighted down by a heavy stone, but it might as well have been anchored by lead. Hermione’s hands trembled, not from fear—though terror was a cold, constant prickle at the base of her neck—but from the sheer, surgical precision required for the spell she was about to cast. "Obliviate." It was a violent word for a necessary mercy. In the living room, her parents were debating the merits of a holiday in Australia, their voices warm and mundane. They were discussing sunblock and travel insurance, blissfully unaware that their only daughter was currently deciding which version of their lives would be safest for them to inhabit.
Hermione entered the room, her wand tucked discreetly into her sleeve. She took a final, aching look at the photos on the mantle: a beach trip in Cornwall, her graduation from primary school, a family dinner where her father had spilled wine on his tie. With one flick of her wrist and a whispered incantation, she began to unspool their reality. She wove a new narrative into the tapestry of their minds: Wendell and Monica Wilkins, dentists with a passion for travel and no daughter to worry about. As the magic took hold, she watched their expressions soften, the lines of worry regarding their "Hermione" smoothing out into a serene, empty curiosity. She had to ensure they didn't just forget her; she had to ensure they didn't miss her. She filled the gaps with a dream of a life in Australia—a quiet, sunny existence where they were free from the creeping shadows of a wizarding war. Leaving them to finish their tea, she retreated to her room. She didn’t cry. There was no time for the luxury of tears. She pulled a worn velvet pouch from under her mattress. Inside were the contents of her building society account—every cent she had scrimped and saved over the years. It felt heavy in her palm, a bizarre irony: thousands of pounds in local currency that would be useless against Killing Curses, yet entirely essential for survival in a world that would soon be hunting them. She began to pack. It wasn't a trunk of clothes, but a kit of survival. A beaded handbag, expanded with an Undetectable Extension Charm, waited on the bed like a hungry mouth. She stuffed it with books on defensive magic, clean wool socks, healing salves, and the Muggle cash. She stopped for a moment, looking at her reflection in the mirror. She looked older. The girl who had worried about passing her O.W.L.s was gone, replaced by a soldier who understood that love was not just a feeling, but a sequence of impossible sacrifices.
"Wendell and Monica," she whispered to the empty air, testing the weight of the new names. They were safe now. Far away. Forgotten.
She turned away from the mirror, shouldered the bag, and stepped out into the night. The strategy was set, the bridge was burned, and for the first time in her life, Hermione Granger had absolutely no idea what the next chapter would hold—only that she would be the one to write it, no matter the cost.
Battle of the Seven Potters
"And then, out of nowhere, out of nothing, they were surrounded. At least thirty hooded figures, suspended in midair, formed a vast circle in the midst of which the Order members had risen, oblivious —"
— Opening stage of the sky battle
Hermione played a crucial role in the Order of the Phoenix by helping to rescue Harry from 4 Privet Drive just before his 17th birthday. Taking Polyjuice Potion, she transformed into one of the 'seven Potters' and bravely flew on a Thestral alongside Kingsley Shacklebolt. Together, they confronted at least five Death Eaters, bravely fighting them off and possibly killing one while injuring two others. Remarkably, they even faced Lord Voldemort himself during their escape. Upon reaching The Burrow, Hermione was immensely relieved to find Harry alive; she ran to him and embraced him tightly. However, their joy was clouded by anxiety when Ron failed to arrive on time. When he finally touched down safely, they rushed to him, overwhelmed with relief. The news of Alastor Moody and Hedwig's tragic deaths deeply affected Hermione, and she was further troubled by Harry's horrifying vision of Garrick Ollivander being tortured.
Later, Rufus Scrimgeour, the Minister for Magic, interrupted Harry's birthday celebrations to fulfill Albus Dumbledore's final wishes by distributing some of his cherished belongings to the trio. Hermione was bestowed with *The Tales of Beedle the Bard*, a collection of enchanting children's stories written in runes. Even before she grasped the true value of this gift, she moved to tears, touched by Dumbledore's profound friendship. During the will's reading, she astounded both Ron and Harry with her remarkable insight when she stated that "Snitches have flesh memories," challenging their assumption that she knew little about Quidditch.
At Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour's wedding on August 1, 1997, Hermione dazzled in a floaty lilac dress paired with matching high heels, her hair sleek and shiny. As Fred and George entertained the guests with entertaining tales of their late uncle Bilius, Hermione couldn't help but feel a spark of joy. She also cherished a light-hearted exchange with Viktor Krum. Yet, thoughts of her husband, Severus, weighed heavily on her, leaving her feeling a bit down. Still, the mood shifted when Ron approached and invited her to dance, lifting her spirits and brightening the evening.
Time at The Burrow
"Undetectable Extension Charm. Tricky, but I think I've done it okay; anyway, I managed to fit everything we need in here... I told you at The Burrow, I've had the essentials packed for days, you know, in case we needed to make a quick getaway."
— Hermione has the foresight to have supplies packed in advance
The wedding was abruptly interrupted by Kingsley Shacklebolt's Patronus, which brought alarming news of the Ministry of Magic's fall. Without hesitation, Hermione took charge, quickly Disapparating herself, Harry, and Ron to safety. Her quick thinking and remarkable magical ability were evident when she produced a small beaded purse enhanced with an Undetectable Extension Charm. Inside, she had thoughtfully packed essential items such as clothing, a tent, healing supplies, Harry's Invisibility Cloak, and several valuable books. They materialized on Tottenham Court Road, a bustling Muggle street, where Hermione wisely suggested entering a café to avoid attracting attention.
Shortly after their discussion, Hermione inadvertently triggered the Taboo jinx on Voldemort's name, leading to their swift detection by Antonin Dolohov and Thorfinn Rowle. Despite the danger, the trio fought back valiantly and managed to subdue the Death Eaters. In a critical move, Hermione altered their memories to mislead them and preserve Ron's cover story that he was bedridden at home due to spattergroit. Acting on Harry's advice, they then proceeded to 12 Grimmauld Place, knowing that there was no safe haven for them anywhere else in the wizarding world.
Infiltrating the Ministry of Magic
Harry Potter: "This is mental."
Hermione: "Completely mental."
— The trio's mutual feelings on the infiltration plan
Upon discovering from Mundungus Fletcher that Dolores Umbridge possessed Tom Riddle's mother’s locket—one of the seven Horcruxes—the trio crafted a bold plan to infiltrate the Ministry and reclaim it. Hermione, utilizing Polyjuice Potion, transformed into Mafalda Hopkirk, a high-ranking Ministry official. She bravely endured the trials of Alderton and Mary Cattermole, innocent Muggle-borns wrongfully accused, sitting right alongside Umbridge and the Death Eater Yaxley. In a clever tactic, Hermione successfully duped Umbridge into divulging information about the locket, which Umbridge falsely claimed was a Selwyn family heirloom.
When Harry passionately confronted Umbridge, they unintentionally exposed their cover. But in that moment of chaos, both Harry and Umbridge succeeded in freeing the Muggle-born prisoners, inspiring them to escape the country while Voldemort reigned. Hermione cleverly retrieved the locket from Umbridge, skillfully replacing it with a duplicate created by the Geminio spell. After reuniting with Ron, they made a hasty exit from the Ministry. However, as they Disapparated, Yaxley unexpectedly grabbed Hermione's arm, allowing him to enter the powerful enchantment that rendered Grimmauld Place undetectable. To break free from his grasp, Hermione quickly invoked a Revulsion Jinx, enabling the trio to make their escape from Grimmauld Place.
Ron's departure and Godric's Hollow
Ron Weasley: "What are you doing? Are you staying, or what?"
Hermione: "I... Yes — yes, I'm staying. Ron, we said we'd go with Harry, we said we'd help —"
Ron Weasley: "I get it. You choose him."
Hermione: "Ron, no — please — come back, come back!"
— Hermione keeps her promise to Harry shortly before Ron's departure
The locket unleashed tremendous turmoil among the three friends, filled as it was with negative energy. This malevolence sparked petty arguments over trivial matters like cooking, while their moods soured considerably. Ron, consumed by the locket’s dark influence, accused Harry of being a poor leader, leading Harry to retaliate with anger and demand that Ron leave. Their conflict escalated into a physical fight, forcing Hermione to step in and cast a Shield Charm to prevent any spells from flying. Fueled by frustration, he decisively stormed out of the tent, leaving their friendship on the brink.
For weeks, both Hermione and Harry were profoundly affected by their friend's departure, grappling with a deep sense of sadness. Yet, Hermione's heart ached for Severus more than she could express. She yearned to tell him about her pregnancy, a secret she desperately wanted to keep from Harry and Ron. With their friend gone, Hermione and Harry spent their evenings in a heavy silence, haunted by Ron's absence and the daunting task of locating Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes. It was a trying time for Hermione, as she dealt with the betrayal of her husband and the painful reality of losing Ron, leaving her isolated and longing for companionship.
Hermione and Harry decided to journey to Godric's Hollow, motivated by the desire to pay their respects at Harry's parents' graves and consult historian Bathilda Bagshot. They hoped Bathilda might possess Godric Gryffindor's sword, as they believed Dumbledore had entrusted it to her, knowing she was an old family friend and that it was vital for destroying a Horcrux.
In the graveyard, as they stood before the Potters' graves, Hermione offered her support to Harry by resting her head gently against him and conjuring beautiful roses to honor the memory of his parents. As they exited the graveyard, they encountered a figure who seemed to be Bathilda, heightening their sense of urgency and purpose.
The duo made their way to Bathilda's house, where they were unexpectedly separated. Inside, Harry was horrified to witness a giant snake slithering from Bathilda's lifeless body, only to be attacked by Nagini upstairs. Disguised as the old woman, Bathilda’s corpse had been reanimated like an Inferius by Voldemort himself. Just when it seemed hopeless, Hermione sprang into action, casting a Blasting Curse that ricocheted around the room, saving Harry’s life in the nick of time. Their narrow escape came just moments before Lord Voldemort arrived at the cabin, intent on capturing Harry.
Hermione arrived in the Forest of Dean just as Harry was grappling with overwhelming pain and vivid memories of Voldemort's brutal attack on his parents and himself in 1981. Without hesitation, she used a Severing Charm to remove the locket from around Harry's neck and swiftly healed the bite that Nagini had inflicted on him with dittany. Unfortunately, during the struggle, Harry’s wand had been broken—likely due to the Blasting Curse Hermione had cast at Nagini. This thought weighed heavily on Hermione, who felt devastated that her curse could have caused Harry's wand to shatter. Yet, despite his heartbreak, Harry couldn’t bring himself to be angry with her. He recognized that it was an unfortunate accident and deeply appreciated that Hermione had ultimately saved his life, reinforcing the bond of trust and loyalty between them.
Feeling a deep sense of loneliness, Hermione was startled when a sudden light appeared before her. It took the form of a Doe Patronus, gracefully standing near the trees. In that moment, Hermione couldn’t help but think it was reminiscent of Harry’s mother’s own Patronus. Eager to share this magical sight, she hurried to call out to Harry, but just as quickly as it had appeared, the Doe vanished into the night.
Ron's return and visit to the Lovegood House
Hermione: "Hand over Harry?"
Ron Weasley: "No deal, get out of the way, we're leaving."
— Hermione and Ron refuse to hand Harry over to Voldemort
Ron reunited with his friends Harry and Hermione in the Forest of Dean after hearing them speak through the Deluminator left to him by Dumbledore. In a moment of bravery, he destroyed the locket Horcrux using Godric Gryffindor's Sword, which had mysteriously appeared in a pool within the Forest. This heroic act not only saved Harry's life but also allowed Ron to regain Harry's trust after having left them. Yet, before vanquishing the locket, it exposed Ron's deepest fears, reminding us all of the internal battles that accompany true courage.
Upon seeing Ron, she unleashed her fury, ignoring Harry's desperate attempts to highlight that Ron had saved his life. In her overwhelming anger, she struck him repeatedly until Harry stepped in, casting a protective shield with Hermione's wand to safeguard Ron. Days passed, and she remained seething with resentment toward Ron for what she viewed as his betrayal. Yet slowly, as time wore on, her anger began to subside, and she found herself opening her heart to him again. As night deepened, Hermione's thoughts drifted back to Severus; her longing for him grew stronger, as she yearned to be reunited with him once more.
The trio set off to Xenophilius Lovegood's home, eager to uncover the truth behind the mysterious symbol from *The Tales of Beedle the Bard*. This emblem, which Xenophilius had worn proudly at Bill and Fleur's wedding, was thought to signify the infamous Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, especially since Krum had recognized it there—after all, Grindelwald was a former Durmstrang student. However, Xenophilius revealed that it actually represented the Deathly Hallows.
As this crucial information dawned on them, Harry realized that Luna was missing from home, even during the Christmas holidays, where she had been gone for an extended period. In a shocking turn, Xenophilius disclosed that Luna had been captured by Death Eaters and was preparing to betray them in a desperate bid to rescue her. This urgent situation heightened the stakes, compelling them to act swiftly and thoughtfully.
In a desperate attempt to capture them, Xenophilius inadvertently caused the Erumpent horn in his living room—mistakenly insisting it was a Snorkack horn, much to Hermione's frustration—to explode. This unexpected event gave the trio an invaluable moment to hide just as Death Eaters Selwyn and Travers arrived. They issued a chilling threat, claiming they would kill Luna if they discovered Xenophilius had deceived them about Harry Potter's presence. Displaying remarkable mental and magical ingenuity, Hermione quickly devised a clever escape plan. She skillfully maintained the facade of Ron's illness while ensuring the Death Eaters caught a glimpse of Harry, successfully preventing them from carrying out their deadly threat against Luna.
Skirmish at Malfoy Manor
"You can't hide the truth from me, filthy Mudblood! You’ve entered my vault at Gringotts—what else have you stolen? Be honest with me, or I swear, I will make you regret it! What more did you take? I demand an answer! CRUCIO! How did you breach my vault’s security? Was that treacherous little goblin in the cellar your accomplice?"
— Overheard parts of Hermione's brutal interrogation
In the spring of 1998, Harry's unintended activation of the Taboo jinx set off a chain of events that led to his capture, along with Hermione and Ron, by a group of Snatchers that included the formidable werewolf Fenrir Greyback. Known for his viciousness, Greyback displayed a disturbing eagerness to bite Hermione. Following a harrowing and aggressive interrogation, the trio was brought to Malfoy Manor, where they were delivered into the hands of the ruthless Bellatrix Lestrange. As she encountered the prized object, Godric Gryffindor's Sword, Bellatrix was struck with panic, swiftly overpowering the Snatchers with her impressive speed and skill. She ordered the captives to be taken to the courtyard, where she intended to confront them at a later time.
In a moment of panic, Bellatrix inadvertently disclosed that she believed the sword and another Horcrux were hidden in her vault at Gringotts. Following this, she cruelly isolated Hermione and subjected her to relentless torture with the Cruciatus Curse. To further torment her, Bellatrix used a dagger to carve the word "Mudblood" into Hermione's arm during her interrogation. Ron, who had desperately tried to take Hermione's place, was left in tears, overwhelmed by the sound of her agonizing screams. Yet, in the midst of suffering, Hermione cleverly concocted a false narrative, insisting that the sword was merely a replica of the original. With Harry's encouragement, she swayed the imprisoned goblin Griphook to go along with her plan, demonstrating her resilience under unimaginable pressure.
Hermione was soon left unconscious from the torture inflicted upon her. Her anguished cries echoed through the manor, filling Harry and Ron with despair. Just when hope seemed lost, Dobby appeared out of nowhere, cracking into existence to rescue the prisoners in the dungeon. Meanwhile, Harry and Ron faced off against Peter Pettigrew, who had come to investigate the commotion. Harry, with fierce determination, reminded Pettigrew that he owed his life to Harry's mercy when dealing with Lupin and Sirius. This brief moment of hesitation cost Pettigrew dearly, as he was ultimately choked to death by his own silver hand—crafted by Voldemort—when he dared to show Harry any semblance of compassion.
They raced upstairs, adrenaline pumping, only to have their wands knocked from their hands as Bellatrix pressed a silver knife to Hermione's throat. With a swift motion, she sliced into Hermione's skin, leaving a shallow cut on her neck. Just when it seemed that Bellatrix would carry out her horrific threat, a brilliant surge of light emanated from Hermione, knocking Bellatrix off balance. This sudden distraction allowed Harry to snatch their wands from Draco, allowing them to Disapparate to the safety of Shell Cottage, where Bill and Fleur Weasley had recently settled after their wedding. Tragically, during their frantic escape, Dobby was fatally wounded by a knife hurled by Bellatrix. Amidst the chaos, they also uncovered the shocking news of Hermione's unexpected pregnancy.
Shell Cottage and Gringotts break-in
Griphook: "As the Dark Lord becomes ever more powerful, your race is set still more firmly above mine! Gringotts falls under wizarding rule, house-elves are slaughtered, and who amongst the wand-carriers protests?"
Hermione: "We do! We protest!"
— Hermione showing her willingness to stand up for others
Hermione, Harry, and Ron took refuge at Shell Cottage for a while, where Fleur devoted herself to helping Hermione heal from her trauma and navigate her pregnancy. Ron remained steadfast at Hermione’s side during this challenging time. Together, the trio crafted a bold plan to infiltrate the Lestrange Vault at Gringotts to recover the Horcrux—Helga Hufflepuff's Cup—with the hesitant assistance of Griphook. The goblin insisted on a trade: Gryffindor's Sword in exchange for his help.
Although Hermione was deeply against deceiving Griphook—who was taken aback by the kindness she and Harry showed to house-elves in a world where most wizards held them in disdain—they ultimately accepted his conditions. Given her pregnancy, Hermione had to stay behind. Harry and Ron arranged for her to be sent to a safe house operated by the Order of the Phoenix, ensuring her protection while they bravely continued their critical mission without her.
Before departure, Hermione skillfully brewed a Polyjuice Potion, carefully using hair from Rodolphus, which Ron was glad to contribute. Once the potion was complete, Harry and Ron took a moment to bid farewell to her, Bill, and Fleur. Shortly thereafter, they met Professor McGonagall, who had been entrusted with Hermione's Patronus weeks prior. With that, Harry and Ron, along with Griphook, confidently apparated away, ready for the challenges ahead.
The Order's Sanctuary and a Surprise Visitor
A month later, the memory felt like a lifetime ago. Had they understood? Had they been quick enough? The potion would have worn off hours ago, leaving them vulnerable, exposed, and likely surrounded. She had left them a trail of breadcrumbs—the hint about the noon-shadow was a piece of ancient architectural theory she’d dug up in a dusty tome at the Order’s library—but theoretical brilliance was a thin shield against reality. She closed her eyes, trying to project a sense of calm into the ether, trying to believe that the cleverness of the hint would be enough to outpace the brutality of their enemies. She felt a sharp, sudden kick from within—a small, insistent reminder of the future she was fighting to protect.
Once again, her mind wandered back to Severus. Deep down, she questioned whether she could truly forgive him or ever regain her trust in him. All of these hidden secrets and dark powers led to Dumbledore's tragic death, ultimately at the hands of Severus. This betrayal shattered Hermione, who felt deeply let down by someone she had fiercely defended against the Order numerous times. Her faith had been cruelly broken, and the very man she believed was her husband had betrayed her trust most devastatingly. Her mind, as it had done every night since the Astronomy Tower, drifted back to him. Why? The question burned, unanswerable and hollow. Was it cowardice? Was it a calculated play for a throne built on ash? Or was it the ultimate, most wretched performance? Every defense she had mounted for him now felt like a humiliation. She had searched for honor in a man who had clearly traded his own for survival, or perhaps, for a darkness she had been too blinded by idealism to recognize. Could she ever forgive him? The word felt flimsy, an insult to the weight of her disillusionment. Forgiveness required a bridge to be built, and Severus had burned the earth on both sides of the chasm.
Relationships
Family:
Parents
Her parents were muggles and dentists. Before the war, she erased her parents' memories so that they could move far away and live in peace. After the war, she flies to Australia and restores their memories.
Husband and Children
Severus Snape
Snape is Hermione's husband.
They united in marriage at the behest of the Order and under Dumbledore's guidance, motivated by the noble cause of safeguarding the greater good.
Eileen Snape II
Eileen, the firstborn child of Hermione and Severus Snape, emerged into the world amidst the chaos of the Battle of Hogwarts. Minerva McGonagall noted that she was born earlier than expected, a sign of her extraordinary nature. Eileen possesses a rare and powerful ability: an ancient magic that thrives on deep, intense emotions like love, hate, and sorrow. This connection to raw emotion is reminiscent of the earliest wizards, who harnessed magic through this fundamental emotional channel. Her unique gifts could redefine the understanding of magic itself.
As Hermione brings her child into the world, Harry confronts Voldemort in the courtyard. Remarkably, Hermione’s unborn baby provides a protective shield for Harry, empowering him to vanquish the Dark Lord once and for all.
Helena Snape
Helena is the beloved second child and daughter of Snape. Her arrival came after the Battle of Hogwarts, marking a new chapter for their family, distinct from that of her older sister, Eileen II.
Outside family
Friends:
Harry Potter
Harry is not just Hermione's best friend; he’s her closest ally alongside Ron. He embodies a brotherly figure for her, providing support and companionship. Although they were sorted into Gryffindor house together, they don’t share dorms at Hogwarts. Nevertheless, their strong bond makes them inseparable as best friends.
Ron Weasley
Ron is Hermione's best friend and closest one besides Harry. She, Harry, and Ron were sorted into Gryffindor.
Throughout their time at Hogwarts, she and Ron experienced a dynamic friendship, characterized by both challenges and strong moments of camaraderie. Together with their best friend, Harry Potter, they navigated the complexities of youth, with Harry often stepping in to mediate their disputes. Though Hermione and Ron had frequent disagreements—typically over trivial matters—they consistently managed to overcome these conflicts, even when some moments tested the limits of their friendship. As they matured, their arguments diminished, leading to a deeper connection, though it remained strictly platonic. Intriguingly, Hermione sometimes playfully referred to Ron as "Ronald." Their first significant conflict arose in their third year when Ron accused Hermione's pet cat, Crookshanks, of devouring his pet rat, Scabbers, illustrating the intense emotions that could flare up even among close friends.
